Genetic Engineering

Posted April 22, 2010 by Editor in Genetics | No comments yet

Genetic Engineering This subject is immensely complicated, but highly entertaining and stimulating for the human spirit. It is about manipulation of the material that has such a great variety that is not fully covered or even understood by scientists. This article will attempt to tackle the issue with the explanation of their importance and functions. What does mean genetic engineering? If we break down the words, then we understand that there are some engineering of material that contains genes. Genetic is something contains genes and genes within the coded information is a material known as DNA, contain. DNA is a chemical molecule that information on an organism has to make. Back to the example in our DNA, the information on our looks, eye color, hair color, size of our body, our blood type, etc. So if we have a DNA of an organism, we can (on paper) to reproduce, the very body we have all the information about them . It’s like a recipe for a dish that will be used to make the exact same dish again and again. DNA is like a recipe for every organism. If we go back to use for cooking analogy, if we leave out a recipe for a dish when its cooked we do not like the taste, because maybe there was too much of some ingredients, so the next time we cook the dish we cook either, the components or replacement with another ingredient. This is the dish to be different from the original recipe and can be more to your taste. We can say that recipe has been manipulated, or call us developed to the dish with flavor that we like. Now, genetic engineering, if we manipulate the DNA, and to try to bring about changes in the body, improve the organism or to do it, which would be useful for us would. produced, for example, an organism, such as cow milk, if we manipulate it with their DNA and produce more milk, we have developed the cow genetically in our favor. As genetic is a major issue, therefore, its engineering is due to many different directions. The basic technique performed many advantages and disadvantages. The advantages that allow us to use this technique to treat or cure many diseases. Genetic engineering is gene therapy, where the defective gene causes the disease that is either replaced with a normal gene or omitted in order to cure the disease applied. An example is cystic fibrosis, where the gene is defective, that the accumulation of thick mucus in a person and causes breathing person is suffering from pneumonia and coughing for most of her life. In this case, the normal gene (not the source of thick mucus) construct inserted into the DNA, which then gives directions and helps to stop the construction of the mucus to build. Although this is a great way to help the problem, but it is very expensive and the research in a long time to clone capable of normal genes. It is also used for genetically modified organisms. For example, the manipulation of bacteria produce antibiotics, hormones and enzymes. If we think of bacteria as a copier, we understand how it is used to make so many useful materials. A bacterium trying to survive by applying a very high rate. Whatever is consumed it is to reproduce and multiply. If we make the gene of interest (gene for antibiotic) insert in feed bacteria, it will take and reproduce that bacteria with specific gene. The bacteria is information that we require in bulk, such as photocopying, for example antibiotics. Genetic engineering is to increase “of nature, animals change, modify plants, and find many answers in relation to human activities. Where its uses are extremely useful, they also give rise to many social ethical and economic aspects. For example, if it is used to select either sex of an unborn child, or select Properties baby like eye color, color of hair or other demand function, leading to designer babies. This technique is also used to genetically modified food (GM), which also raises many questions as if the use of genetically modified food and more diseases in people and manufactures its use should be allowed to produce weather. There is much to do more research needed to advance this technology. Like everything else in life, there are advantages and disadvantages. The correct use can be quite beneficial to humans and are therefore with a certain legal restrictions should.

Loss Of Tumor-suppressor And DNA-maintenance Proteins Causes Tissue Demise

Posted October 15, 2009 by Editor in Biotech Daily, Genetics | No comments yet

A new study demonstrates that loss of the tumor-suppressor protein p53, coupled with elimination of the DNA-maintenance protein ATR, severely disrupts tissue maintenance in mice. As a result, tissues deteriorate rapidly, which is generally fatal in these animals.
